RDOS Board of Directors support transfer of utilities ownership

INFORMATION RELEASE

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) has taken steps toward ownership transfer of the Vintage Views Wastewater and Lakeshore Waterworks systems from a private owner to the RDOS. In August 2024, the Regional District finalized an agreement with the operator for the transfer of the utilities ownership.

On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the RDOS Board of Directors supported proceeding to the next stages in the acquisition process. This includes preparing a service establishment bylaw and conducting a referendum for users. In addition, the RDOS Utilities division will be preparing to submit grant applications when a program becomes available to assist in reducing the financial impacts on system users.

“This is an important step for the communities of Lakeshore Highlands, Vintage Views, and Heritage Hills,” said Matt Taylor, Electoral Area “D” Director. “I want to thank residents for their patience during this process. Preparing for future public engagement will continue and community meetings are anticipated once service costs are determined.”

The service costs will include the anticipated operating costs for each utility system as well as the required capital to bring the systems to regulatory standards. These costs will be required before the community is asked whether there is support for the RDOS taking ownership of the system through an assent process.

When possible funding sources are identified, such as federal or provincial grant programs, and financial impacts to residents and property owners can be calculated and published.
