Organic waste landfill fees and charges updates

News Article

INFORMATION RELEASE

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Fees and Charges Bylaw No. 3050, 2024, was read a first, second, and third time as amended, and was adopted during the May 9, 2024, Board of Directors meeting.

On Thursday, June 13, 2024, the RDOS Board voted to amend the bylaw. This was done to ensure fees reflect the actual cost of providing the curbside collection service and to clarify language regarding organics, yard waste, and fruit waste disposal.

Amendments to the bylaw include changes to landfill fees for organic waste. This change addresses the anticipated increase in organic waste due to agricultural fruit die-off this winter. It also aligns the expenses for organics management with current costs.

To view the updated landfill fees, please refer to RDOS Fees and Charges Bylaw No. 3050, 2024, (pages 20-29). The RDOS will begin collecting the new fees on July 1, 2024.

Changes to organic waste landfill fees

  • Residential and agricultural organic waste is free for the first 500kg, then $75 per metric tonne.
  • All commercial organic waste is $75 per metric tonne.

The RDOS Board establishes fees and charges for various Regional District services and information, including RDOS-administered landfills. In accordance with the Local Government Act Section 397 (imposition of fees and charges and Section 462 fees related to applications and inspections), the Regional Board establishes fees and charges which reflect cost recovery for services and information provided.
