EOC Update: Avoid bridges, roadways and dykes, remain in place if safe to do so Nov. 16, 2021 10:45 am
News ArticleThe Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Emergency Operations Centre (RDOS EOC) continues to monitor flooding and high water across the region. The current situation is dynamic and constantly changing, the safety of first responders and the public remains paramount.
Many bridges, highways, roads and dykes are compromised, washed out or highly stressed. Please do not travel unless absolutely necessary. Do not visit flooding sites or high water areas or river systems for any reason. Do not use backcountry or Forest Service Roads, they may be eroded and their stability cannot be guaranteed.
First responders, RCMP and provincial authorities (Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, River Forecast Centre, Emergency BC) are conducting house by house assessments in several communities to determine the status of properties and infrastructure and whether families may return home. The RDOS EOC is working with its community partners, member municipalities, fire departments and Indigenous neighbours to ensure the safety of residents. Providing those in need with necessary supplies until roads can reopen is a top priority.
Certain areas are challenging to access, remain where you are if it is safe to do so and avoid all unnecessary travel. If you absolutely must leave your location, check drivebc.ca for latest updates.
If you have been evacuated due to flooding or are on Evacuation Alert, please register with the Evacuee Registration and Assistance tool even if you do not require referrals such as housing or other services.
