RDOS extends condolences to Indigenous neighbours
News ArticleOn behalf of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) Board of Directors and staff, deepest condolences are extended to our Indigenous neighbours regarding the discovery of children’s remains at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.
Residential schools operated in Canada for more than 160 years, with the last school closing its doors in 1996. Children were removed from their homes without consent from their parents or communities to board at residential schools, which punished the children if they practiced their language or culture. The discovery of the remains highlights the damaging and lasting impacts of the residential school system and its inter-generational impacts to Indigenous families and communities.
“The loss of so many children is profound, and the RDOS recognizes the strength and resiliency of these impacted communities as they mourn and honour their children,” says RDOS Chair, Karla Kozakevich. “The RDOS extends its support to our Indigenous neighbours during this time of grief.”
