Alternative Approval Process for 9-1-1 Emergency Service Loan Authorization Bylaw

News Article

INFORMATION RELEASE

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) Board is initiating an Alternative Approval Process (AAP) to seek approval of the electors for a loan of up to $800,000 authorized through the adoption of 9-1-1 Emergency Service Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 3064, 2024.

The Regional District’s emergency telecommunications system requires upgrades and new infrastructure to enhance responder safety, meet operational requirements, and comply with industry standards. The proposed improvements include upgrades to radio equipment and enhancements to communications network coverage through equipment relocation and technology upgrades.

An AAP allows local governments to directly engage residents and property owners regarding the adoption of certain bylaws. In this case, eligible electors can express their opposition to the adoption of 9-1-1 Emergency Service Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 3064, 2024.

If ten percent (7,193) or more of eligible electors sign and submit official opposition forms (also known as Elector Response Forms), a referendum will be required before the Regional District can proceed with the proposal. Electors who support the adoption of the bylaw do not need to take any action.

All eligible electors in the RDOS, and its member municipalities (Keremeos, Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton, Princeton, and Summerland), are eligible to register their objection to Bylaw No. 3064, 2024, by submitting a signed Elector Response Form to the RDOS office at 101 Martin Street, Penticton. The deadline for submission is Friday, September 13, 2024, at 4:30 pm. Forms are available on the RDOS Regional Connections Alternative Approval Process page and at the RDOS office.
